HistoryLocal nonbelievers started a group on Meetup.com which became known as Stanislaus Skeptics, and from 2009-2011 they held events and started to grow in numbers. Due to a variety of reasons the original founders were unable to continue managing the group, and the newer members wanted a group that embraced a secular humanist philosophy. Stanislaus Humanists was formed in 2012 and continued building interest on Meetup.com On November 20, 2013, Stanislaus Humanists became a chapter of the American Humanist Association, a 501(c)(3) organization, and shortly thereafter Articles of Incorporation were filed with the state of California. Stanislaus Humanists, Inc., is organized as a California public benefit not-for-profit corporation, and we are registered as a charitable trust with the California Attorney General. Our first official annual meeting was held in January 2014, during which our first Board of Directors were elected and our first officers were installed. Stanislaus Humanists is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and a chapter of the American Humanist Association. Through the years we have participated in a variety of community service opportunities including caring for the homeless, river cleanups, and assisting refugees. In 2018 and 2019 we adopted Pathways, a transitional housing program for young adults who have aged out of the foster care system, as our service project. We focused on bringing them household and personal items and ensured all the residents had Christmas gifts. In the COVID-19 era, we continue to support our community by gathering online utilizing video meeting technology. |
